The Beauty of Sugi Boards – The Ultimate Long Lasting Weatherboards

Sugi boards are commonly admired for their bold dark finish that you often see on Japanese wooden buildings. Sugi boards are a fantastic way to add timeless style to your home while also making a minimal impact on the planet. This type of weatherboard finish requires no painting and can last up to 80 years, meaning the character of your home will be well maintained long enough for many generations to admire it.

How are Sugi boards made?

Sugi boards are made by burning off the outside layer of cedar weatherboards and brushing and washing off the burnt carbon. This results in the remaining top layer of wood becoming harder and resistant to water, in addition to taking on a beautiful, dark brown patina with highlighted grain.

While conventional weatherboards need to be regularly cleaned and painted along with wooden shingles, Sugi boards are one of the ultimate low maintenance building claddings. They also add an element of charm not commonly seen in Australian homes. Sugi boards are a fantastic way to make your home stand out from the crowd.

If you like the look and traditional feel of Sugi boards, chat with your builders and architects in the initial design stages of your home build. Quality and experienced builders will be able to incorporate your design choices into their build and emphasise the beauty of the Sugi boards.

Sugi floor boards

Traditional Japanese builders also use the Sugi technique to create beautiful and long-lasting floorboards. This burning-off method can be applied to a variety of woods, such as the radiata pine floor. At Calm Living Homes, we’ve used the Sugi board technique to produce sensational results that not only look beautiful but are good for the environment.

The Sugi board technique is a healthy, low environmental impact finish that completely eliminates the need for sanding and the application of toxic finishes that emit Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which can cause a range of health problems.
